Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE)

There are times when parents may disagree with how your child’s K-12 school completed a special education evaluation or the outcome of the evaluation. In this case, parents have the right to request an IEE from your school district at public expense. An IEE is an evaluation conducted by a qualified examiner who is not employed by the public school agency (i.e. school district) responsible for the education of the child. An IEE is no cost to you as the parent, as it’s paid for by the school district.

To request an IEE be completed, send a written request (email or letter) to your district’s special education director stating you disagree with the district’s evaluation and are requesting an IEE (it’s completely up to you, but you are not required to provide details other than you disagree). The school district will then respond to you, typically agreeing with your request. Certain evaluators may be suggested by the district, but you may choose any qualified evaluator.

The specifics of what will be conducted will depend on the referral concern. After we complete an IEE, a feedback session will be held with parents first and a comprehensive written report will be provided. A copy of this report must also be submitted to the school district for review. Attending a meeting with the school staff to explain the results of the IEE can then take place.
